Silverchair aka Kerusi Perak – Suicidal Dream, Stomp the frog!

If you are thinking I am going to write about politics just by reading the title, you are wrong..

I am walking down the memory lane! Friends and I were talking about ehem.. how it is a suicidal move for any component party from BN to accept any of the toads.. then suddenly of to talking about suicidal dreams..

Silverchair was one of my favorite bands in the 90’s as a kid growing up. I was studying at Kolej TDTH Bujang, Miri. Life as a hostel student during that time was fun! Not sure of the reason why I think it was fun then, but I think it had to with us doing or sharing things, activities etc. with a bunch of good friends. Well, anything done with a company of good jolly people is fun and memorable!

I don’t remember how I came across Silverchair.  One of the reason why I was hooked to Silverchair back then was because of their simple guitar chords. I was a noob and being able to play their songs was such an ego boost for an adolescent kid. Hmm, why kids at my time would love Silverchair’s gut-wrenching, haunting melodies? Sad bunch of kids we were.

I think it was Cibol who blasted many of their songs back then. Well, Cibol was the official ‘boombox’ for us during that times. He was called Superstar not for nothing LOL! He was crazier than me about Silverchair.

I remember a BM teacher scolded him for putting up the ‘Suicidal Dream’ lyrics on his classroom notice board. Something along the line “Kamu tahu apa itu suicidal??!!” (Do you know the meaning of suicidal?) Ha ha ha! Then one time we did a perfomance for Teacher’s Day. Out of so many songs in the world to choose from, we picked ‘Shade’ by Silverchair.

While Cibol singing the song to impress the girls, me and another guy (I think it was Razali) were playing the guitars. We had a sketch going on while we performed the song. I don’t really understand the idea of the sketch and I am not sure who was the director. Most probably Cibol. Haha! Let me describe the sketch for you..

We had a friend named Zulfadly prancing on the stage looking disheveled and wearing torn shirt (I think baju Melayu), walking slowly.. practically dragging himselves like he’s having rubbery knees or bad arthritis, lighting candles on the floor. (Lights on stage were off) I was playing the guitar and watching from behind the stage, er.. it was kinda creepy. I was not very sure what kind of impression it gave to the principal, teachers and other students watching but I think it must be kinda weird.

It was the sketch and the candle-lighting part that went bad with the school’s principal. Her comment was something along the line “Apa ini? Ritual ajaran sesat? Black metal?” (What is this? Cult ritual?) Hmm, I guess some people just so anal about candle lighting
